Pandorum is an upcoming American science fiction horror film written by Travis Milloy and directed by Christian Alvart. The film stars Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster. Filming began in Berlin in August 2008. Pandorum is scheduled to be released on September 4, 2009. According to Variety, "Pandorum... centers on two crewmen who awaken aboard their spacecraft unaware of their mission or identities and then make a discovery that threatens the survival of mankind."

#230. Africa must learn from Nigeria's "microwave" movies

OUAGADOUGOU (Reuters) – In the time it takes for a lovingly crafted art house movie to emerge as winner of the top prize at Burkina Faso's pan-African FESPACO cinema festival, Nigeria's prolific producers will already have churned out another 50 films.

They might be tales of cannibalism, sorcery and jealous girlfriends who shrink their errant boyfriends into bottles, but Nigeria's $450 million home video industry is the third biggest in the world, after America's Hollywood and India's Bollywood.

By contrast, FESPACO's filmmakers -- considered the best on the continent -- rely on dwindling donations, and scrabble for private financing and poor distribution deals amid a spate of cinema closures.

"Cinema is certainly dying," said Zimbabwean director Michael Raeburn, whose Johannesburg-set film "Triomf" is competing for Africa's equivalent of an Oscar. "South Africa is all about DVD and TV, no one makes any money from cinema."

Nigeria shot its first film, "Palaver" (Trouble), in 1904, and its home movie industry has been creating it ever since.

"It's not often talked of with respect," said Nigerian-born Chike Nwoffiah, whose first feature film "Sabar," set in California, is competing in the Diaspora category at FESPACO.

"It's "microwave' filming: push the button, wait three seconds and the film is done," he said. "Some of the directors can go from script to print in two weeks. The speed with which they make these films implies something is being sacrificed."

Even so, demand is rising. Last year "Nollywood" produced more than 2,000 films, up from 662 five years ago. Most films are produced in local languages -- Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo among them -- while English accounts for more than 40 percent.

"However bad the quality, Nollywood shows there's definitely a demand for African storytelling," said South African director Zola Maseko, whose film "Drum" won the prized Etalon d'Or de Yennenga in 2005. "It shows you have a whole community of people who have a deep need to see and hear themselves -- Africa hasn't had that chance."

QUALITY WILL COME

Nollywood also has growing audience among Africans living abroad, keen for a taste of home, whether watched in south London hairdressers or rented from Texas video stores.

"The Diaspora is just getting to know these films through horrible pirated copies and there is a real opening here. It's how Bollywood got started," said Vijay Mahajan, a marketing professor based in the United States who thinks Nollywood should chase after a greater slice of the 100 million Africans who live outside the continent.

"Bollywood has bought up more than 200 screens in 28 U.S. cities and Nigeria's industry should consider doing the same, he said.

Nigeria is also embracing modern digital technology at speed: there is already a 24-hour website for Nollywood internet downloads, for 5.99 pounds ($8.47) a month.

As Nigeria eyes a growing market, on the outskirts of hot, dusty Ouagadougou, FESPACO's International Film and Television Market (MICA) -- which is meant to help producers find buyers -- is wilting.

Weary hostesses wait at forlorn stands, and booth M43, allotted to the Nigerian Film Commission, is empty.

"They reserved a space but they didn't come and they didn't pay," said Chantal Belem, MICA secretary.

However much some of Africa's expertly trained filmmakers disdain Nigeria's commercial approach, others believe it is filling a gap which will bring dividends in the long run.

"It is creating a market for films. In South Africa people are already addicted, it's like crack cocaine. Over the years audiences will become more discerning," said Maseko. "Hollywood in the 1920s was no good; Bollywood in the 1960s was no good: Nollywood will have its day too."

1. No Watchmen sequel
Watchmen director Zack Snyder will not commit himself to directing a sequel to the superhero flick, despite the money offered."There's no way I would be involved in a sequel or prequel. Will they make one? I have no idea how you would. The work is the work. This movie is about ideas. Anything else you would do, if you did a sequel to it, misses the point entirely of what Watchmen is,” Snyder said. However, Billy Crudup, who plays Jon Osterman, insisted that he has already signed a contract to make a follow-up to the film."Contractually, we are obligated. I will do it. I just don't know what it is we would do," Crudup said.

2. High School Musical 4 in the making
High School Musical is back for a fourth instalment in 2010, but will not feature key stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.Apparently, the film will feature a love triangle "set against the cross-town rivalry between the East High Wildcats and West High Knights," according to a press statement from Disney.Peter Barsocchini, who wrote the first three films in the franchise, is back as screenwriter.

3. Willis and Morgan for cop comedy
Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan will team up in the new police comedy A Couple of Cops. Morgan and Willis will play two detective trying to track down a stolen baseball card, and also a kidnapped beauty queen.The movie will be directed by Kevin Smith.

4. Carrey and Gyllenhaal for Damn Yankees
Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal will take on the leading roles in a big-screen version of musical Damn Yankees.The movie is about an ordinary man, played by Gyllenhaal, who trades his soul to a devil-like figure, played by Carrey, for a place on New York's most famous baseball team.Carrey was last seen in last year’s comedy , while Gyllenhaal had a role in 2007’s police thriller Zodiac.

#228. Cinema : Incredible journey in Race to Witch Mountain

Jack Bruno drives one heck of a taxi. His standard yellow cab survives everything from being rammed by three heavy-duty government SUVs to attacks from a Predator-like alien evil-doer and bumping along railway tracks at chassis-crushing speed.“I’m a pretty good driver,” says Dwayne Johnson, the actor behind the wheel, then laughingly qualifies, “when we can have multiple takes.”

That indestructible taxi and the car chases it is involved in are central to Race to Witch Mountain, a sci-fi adventure from Disney that has Johnson’s character, a Las Vegas cabbie and ex-con, helping two alien teenagers with paranormal powers unravel the secret of the mysterious Witch Mountain to save their world. Out to stop them are the government and an extraterrestrial monster.

The film is a modern-day re-imagining of the 1975 Disney classic Escape from Witch Mountain, based on a book by Alexander Key. In the roles of the teenage siblings Sara and Seth are a captivating AnnaSophia Robb and newcomer Alexander Ludwig. Other cast members include Carla Gugino as a kooky astrophysicist and Ciarán Hinds, the sinister lead UFO investigator.

“I enjoyed the car chases very much,” says Johnson in an interview during a press junket last month at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort to promote the film. Director Andy Fickman was also there.

“We had great stunt coordinators (who had worked on the Bourne and Spider-Man films), and it was an honour to get behind the wheel.”

Johnson speaks often of feeling honoured. Coming from the world of professional wrestling, he’s had a certain image to overcome to prove himself. But from his single line in his first movie, The Mummy Returns (“Haku machente”, which apparently means “It’s hot as hell” in ancient Egyptian) in 2001, to headlining Race to Witch Mountain, the progression seems to have been without major missteps.

“I knew it was going to take a lot of work, but I didn’t give myself a timeline. That was one way to make God laugh – ‘so those are your plans?’,” he quips.

“It has taken as much time as I had anticipated. Hopefully, my performances are decent as well.”

Despite dropping his former wrestling persona – there’s not even the barest cock of the right eyebrow that “The Rock” was so famous for, although his unnerving focus on you when you ask a question remains – it is a reputation that still dogs him. Johnson, however, gives due credit to the experience that helped mould his career in entertainment.

“I didn’t have the luxury of studying dramatic arts. Wrestling provided a really invaluable platform, in terms of entertaining huge crowds every night.

“In front of 20,000 people, if your jokes bombed, that was a big learning experience. You either sink or swim in that guerrilla-style of shooting, and it helped my transition into films.”

Strangely for an actor whose name now appears above the title in movie posters, Johnson seems willing to alternate his leading roles with supporting ones, such as Agent 23 in Get Smart and that very memorable gay bodyguard in Be Cool.

“When I first broke into movies, my personal identification of the type of actor I wanted to be was one with a broad foundation of work. I didn’t want to be pigeonholed. I went for material that moved me, and would move and entertain audiences.

“Even those films that didn’t do well at the box office ... I don’t regret doing them. They were the best decisions I could have made for myself at that time,” he says.

Johnson is the antithesis of Jack Bruno in terms of his character’s misanthropic nature and lack of communication skills, but he can identify with a man who stumbles in life and tries to stay on the right path.

“I know what it’s like to struggle like that ... I was arrested several times when I was younger. I’m grateful to the adult figures in my life who saw potential in me even when I didn’t see it. Ultimately, it gave me the opportunity to do great things.”

Rolling in the aisles

Johnson and director Fickman are interviewed separately but it’s uncanny how both men, completely different physically, speak similarly about their penchant for humour – Johnson likens the two of them to a comedy duo – that they could be finishing each other’s sentences were they in the same room.

“My humour tends to permeate throughout the set,” says Fickman, “and Dwayne likes to laugh a lot. The two of us together are very dangerous.

“If something bad is going to happen, and if we can look at each other and start laughing, we know we can figure it out.”

It’s that sense of humour that Fickman has tried to inject into Race to Witch Mountain.

“All my favourite movies growing up, like Star Wars, ET, Close Encounters, Indiana Jones, were great adventures, but I remember them being very funny as well. The comedy helped make them more human.

“When people laugh, it makes the film more enjoyable because you can breathe a little.

“We also set out to do just a really cool action film that everyone can enjoy. There’s no bad language, no nudity, nothing that some adults don’t want their kids to see. But we didn’t hold back on the action.”

The UFO phenomenon is something Fickman couldn’t escape even if he wanted to.

“When you’re born in Roswell, New Mexico (made infamous by a supposed crash of a UFO that the US government and military allegedly tried to cover up), even if you’ve never had an encounter, it follows you the rest of your life,” he says.

He did “tons of research” for the film, gathering as much information as he could from various sources, including leading ufologists like Whitley Strieber, one of the most famous alleged alien abductees who wrote about his experience in the best-selling book Communion, and Bill Birnes, the host of The History Channel’s UFO Hunters.

“We wanted our sci-fi adventure to be grounded in some level of reality. We didn’t want to be disrespectful to people who had experienced encounters. The story had to be as real to them as possible,” says Fickman, who reportedly also sought assistance from the US military and CIA advisers to shape the elements of the movie.

In fact, the film opens with actual news and documentary footage of UFO sightings.

Johnson says it was a great help to the storyline that Fickman is such a huge believer. And is he?

“Yes,” he states without hesitation. “We would be incredibly arrogant to believe that we were the only intelligent life in the universe.”

Fantasy and reality

Johnson has done action and comedy, sung, danced, dressed in drag and even kissed a guy! This month, he hosts the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, where he promises to take anyone on in a burping competition. Currently in development is “some great dramatic material”.

“I’m drawn to characters who start off being flawed, that end up becoming, maybe not great, but better people,” Johnson says.

And that’s exactly what Jack Bruno is – the anti-hero who ends up saving not just one world, but two.

Says Fickman: “Jack is not good with people, but he’s put in a situation where he has to be with somebody. There is conflict – did we pick the wrong guy? – but he is the right guy.

“We didn’t want to start right away with someone so good, like a superhero. We yell and scream, it’s what makes us human, and to bob and weave like that is far more interesting. There are more places to go emotionally. As much as we want to get somewhere, it’s the journey that counts.”

Apart from the typical difficulties that come with any movie – rain, forgetting lines, getting the dog to go where it should – the biggest challenge for Fickman was creating a believable look.

“The hardest thing when dealing with fantasy is how to make something look real that you’ve never seen – the spaceship, for example.”

Making a conscious effort to use special effects only when needed, the filmmakers built massive sets “to crawl around in” and all the car chases and scenes in the city of Las Vegas were real.

“When you have technology in movies to make anything happen, it’s not always the best thing. Not everything is filmed against a green screen, it takes away from the human drama. Sometimes, it’s just nice to enjoy the race,” says Fickman.

This is the second time the director and actor are working together after 2007’s highly successful The Game Plan, also from Disney, and it won’t be the last. “We have several things in development and I hope to do many, many movies with him,” says Fickman.

“I love that Andy is passionate about his craft, work and movies. What I really appreciate is how happy he is. He’s very successful and good at what he does, and an excellent communicator, with a big heart. He’s a special guy,” says Johnson.

“We do like each other. Besides looking like twins, we have a fun relationship,” Fickman jokes.

He also speaks highly of the film’s younger co-stars.

“I saw AnnaSophia in Bridge to Terabithia and really liked her. We didn’t meet anyone else for the role. And she set the bar so high, the trick was finding her brother.

“Alexander came in for one of the massive auditions. He had a great personality and by the end of the screen test, Dwayne and AnnaSophia loved him,” says Fickman.

“We hadn’t chosen anyone for the part yet, but as Alexander was at the door saying goodbye, Dwayne yells out, ‘That kid was awesome!’ Thankfully, he’s the one we cast, but Dwayne can never open his mouth again!”

Man for the job

As articulate as he is, Johnson is suddenly at a loss for words when reminded that he once proclaimed himself to be “the most electrifying man in sports entertainment”. He mutters a sheepish “oh-oh” and has to think for a second about what title he would give himself now.

“Erm ... erm ... probably the biggest eater in Hollywood.”

Johnson is obviously more than that. He would never say so himself, humble as he is about his acting success, but, as Fickman gushes, he is an inspiring person to work with.

So inspiring, in fact, that comparisons were made between the speech pattern of President Barack Obama while he was campaigning and that of The Rock.

“I was incredibly honoured when I heard that. President Obama is an exceptional speaker and communicator and I believe in the power of communication with our children, our loved ones and certainly with our adversaries. What a wonderful man, what a wonderful family.

“I anticipate great leadership. There’ll be a bit of stumbling as we all do but out of that comes a great learning experience. That is what you find with exceptional leaders,” says Johnson.

And does he have political ambitions?

“Not right now,” he says.

He settles into life as an illegal immigrant and soon discovers that Xiu Xiu has married Eguchi, a yakuza leader. He then finds himself working with Eguchi in order to use the latter’s power to gain legal status and start a new life.

Wu is Jie, Steelhead’s timid fellow villager and also an illegal immigrant in Japan. While helping a friend work a scam, Jie is badly beaten and disfigured. Unable to get over the trauma, his personality undergoes a dramatic change and he soon starts peddling drugs for the yakuza.

Sementara itu, Pengarah program, Fauziah Buyong berkata, selain Rosyam pihaknya turut mengundang Presiden Persatuan Sutradara Malaysia (FDAM), Ahmad Ibrahim atau Mat London dan Setiausaha Persatuan Penulis Skrip Malaysia (SWAM), Ismail Ahmad sebagai fasilitator.

"Ini adalah peluang keemasan kepada mereka yang berminat dalam bidang penulisan skrip drama TV atau filem, tidak kira sama ada yang baru hendak berjinak-jinak ataupun yang sudah ada pengalaman.

"Kami bawakan kepada mereka tokoh yang sudah ada nama dan pengalaman luas dalam bidang ini untuk berkongsi ilmu pengetahuan secara langsung kepada mereka sebagai input yang paling berguna untuk mereka berkarya," katanya.

Menurut Fauziah, pihaknya tidak meletakkan motif perniagaan untuk menganjurkan bengkel tersebut meskipun sedikit bayaran dikenakan bagi menampung kos penganjuran. Apa yang paling utama membantu golongan yang berminat untuk menjana pendapatan dengan menulis skrip drama TV dan filem.

"Kami sekadar mahu berkongsi peluang dan menganggap ini adalah program ilmu yang berkonsep 'menang-menang'. Semua orang akan dapat manfaat dengan cuba mencari pendapatan dengan cara ini," katanya.

Kelebihan bagi peserta bengkel selain peluang menimba pengalaman daripada tokoh lakonan terkenal, peserta diberikan sijil penyertaan yang diiktiraf FDAM dan SWAM.

"Di samping itu, kami juga akan cuba menjadi perantara untuk menghubungkan peserta yang berminat dengan FDAM dan SWAM bagi mengetengahkan hasil karya mereka dalam bidang ini.

"Kami akan tubuhkan bank skrip daripada karya peserta dan skrip yang berkualiti kami akan bawa kepada FDAM dan SWAM untuk dikomersialkan," katanya.

#224. Isu : Tiada usaha pulihara Studio Jalan Ampas

MESKIPUN bagi kebanyakan pengunjung Jalan Ampas, Singapura, kewujudan sebuah bangunan terbiar usang tercatat No 8, dianggap mencacatkan pemandangan. Sedangkan di tapak itulah suatu ketika dahulu gah sebagai studio penggambaran filem Melayu yang menyimpan pelbagai kenangan dan menjadi gelanggang melahirkan seniman tersohor tanah air.Studio Malay Filem Productions (MFP) di Jalan Ampas, Singapura milik Shaw Brothers beroperasi selama 19 tahun sebelum ditutup pada 1967.

Mengikut sejarah, ia dibangunkan dua beradik, Runme dan Run Run Shaw di kawasan seluas 40,000 meter persegi. Studio itulah yang melahirkan bintang ternama seperti Seniman Agung, Tan Sri P Ramlee dan rakan seangkatannya termasuk Datuk Aziz Satar, S Shamsuddin, AR Tompel, Datuk Sarimah, Tan Sri Jins Shamsuddin, Datuk Ahmad Mahmud, Datuk Jamil Sulong serta ramai lagi.

Malah, di situ juga banyak filem lama yang kekal popular dan menjadi bahan bualan masyarakat sehingga kini, terutama koleksi filem lakonan dan arahan P Ramlee menjalani penggambaran.

Bagaimanapun, pemandangan serba kekurangan bangunan berkenaan mengguris perasaan terutama peminat filem Melayu klasik dan artis veteran yang mengunjungi kawasan itu.

Hanya terdapat sebuah batu memorial didirikan di depan studio berkenaan tetapi tiada sebarang usaha dijalankan di kawasan berkenaan termasuk mengekalkan identiti dan warisan studio berkenaan.

Lokasi bersebelahan bangunan studio berkenaan sudah dibangunkan termasuk kelihatan sebuah pusat penjagaan orang tua dan barisan bangunan rumah kedai yang belum beroperasi.

Persatuan Seniman Malaysia, Datuk Mustapha Maarof, berkata sumbangan studio berkenaan tidak seharusnya dilupakan kerana studio berkenaan yang pernah dilabelkan sebagai 'Hollywood Filem Melayu' ketika zaman kegemilangannya pada era 1950-an dan awal 1960-an.

Menurutnya, studio berkenaan terpaksa ditutup pada 1967 atas alasan tidak ada lagi sambutan terhadap filem Melayu di Singapura, selain kekurangan bakat baru.

Ini disebabkan ramai seniman dan seniwati filem Melayu 'lari' ke Kuala Lumpur berikutan isu politik apabila Singapura terpisah dari Malaysia.

"Apabila menjejak kaki ke studio berkenaan, perasaan yang kami (artis veteran) alami sukar diungkapkan kerana ia tempat mencari makan, menunjukkan bakat dan pelbagai kenangan manis dilalui bersama ketika penggambaran sesuatu filem.

"Antara pengalaman saya di studio berkenaan ialah ketika menjalani penggambaran filem Hang Tuah pada 1956 bersama Tan Sri P Ramlee.

"Kami mendapati keadaannya sudah banyak berubah termasuk barangan lama seperti peralatan penggambaran yang mempunyai nilai sejarah dibiarkan berlapuk. Ia sepatutnya dipulihara sebagai warisan sejarah kerana peranan pentingnya dalam industri perfileman serantau," katanya.

Sementara itu, artis veteran, Ahmad C, 78, berkata, beliau memulakan kerjanya sebagai pembantu pejabat di studio berkenaan termasuk menghantar mesej kepada artis mengenai jadual penggambaran dari lokasi berkenaan ke sesuatu tempat dengan hanya menaiki basikal.

Menurutnya, biarpun sudah lama tidak mengunjungi studio berkenaan akibat menghidap lelah, pelbagai peristiwa dan kenangan di studio Jalan Ampas terpahat di fikirannya selama-lamanya.

"Ramai yang tertanya bagaimana terdapat perkataan C di belakang nama saya. Ceritanya bermula apabila pengarah sukar memberi arahan kerja di studio apabila terdapat tiga pekerja bernama Ahmad. Oleh itu pengarah berkenaan meletakkan huruf di penghujung nama setiap kami termasuk Ahmad A, Ahmad B dan diikuti nama saya Ahmad C.

"Saya juga mempunyai pengalaman berlakon dalam filem Seniman Bujang Lapok apabila pengarah Ahmad Nesfu menghalau 'budak tiga ekor' Bujang Lapok, saya mencelah dengan secebis kertas, "Tuan Director, ini tiga orang tak tahu pasal shooting!".

"Lebih sayu mengenangkan pahit getir dilalui untuk menyara hidup sesudah Studio Jalan Ampas di Singapura ditutup. Sejak itu saya melakukan apa saja untuk mencari rezeki sehingga kini 'tersadai' di Tanjung Buai, Teluk Sengat, Kota Tinggi, Johor," katanya ketika ditemui di kediamannya di rumah pangsa berhampiran Tampines, Singapura, baru-baru ini.

Selepas menjalani hukuman untuk tuduhan yang palsu, Sweeney pulang ke kampung halamannya dan mendapati isterinya telah mati dan anak perempuannya menjadi tawanan. Semua ini adalah angkara seorang hakim yang jahat.

Sweeney kembali ke kedai lamanya yang terletak di tingkat atas kedai pai daging tuan rumah, Mrs Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter). Di sini, Sweeney membunuh pelanggannya dan menghantar mayat ke tingkat bawah, di mana Mrs Lovett menggunakannya untuk mengeluarkan pai yang sedap.

Tayangan perdana filem ini pada 15 Mac dan siaran ulangan dapat disaksikan pada Isnin 16 Mac, 1 tengah hari, Khamis 19 Mac, 7 malam, Sabtu 21 Mac, 11 malam, dan Ahad 22 Mac, pada pukul 11 pagi.

Filem seterusnya, I Am Legend, Will Smith berlakon sebagai Robert Neville, seorang saintis ketenteraan. Tiga tahun selepas sejenis virus memusnahkan kemanusiaan, Robert adalah manusia terakhir yang masih hidup di New York City. Tetapi dia bukan keseorangan. Robert boleh keluar pada waktu siang, tetapi pada waktu malam, dia mesti melindungi dirinya daripada ‘mutan’ pembunuh yang mengendap dalam bayangan dan kegelapan. Walaupun Robert hampir menemui cara untuk mengubati kesan virus itu, dia terpaksa menghadapi perubahan kelakuan makhluk itu.

Maya ingin tahu semua mengenai hubungan di antara ibu bapanya, bagaimana mereka bertemu dan jatuh cinta.

Filem komedi yang romantik ini membuat penonton asyik meneka siapakah ibu sebenar Maya, mungkinkah kekasih Will di kolej, Emily atau April yang membawa gaya yang mengelirukan atau pun gadis intelektual, Summer (Rachel Weisz). Ia berulang pada hari Isnin 30 Mac 1 tengah hari dan Selasa 31 Mac pada jam 5 petang.

Kesibukan dengan tugasan harian membataskan waktu Maya menulis begitu juga kotak email tidak dijenguk langsung justeru blog hanya dimuatkan dengan berita filem semasa dan kotak e-mail mencecah ratusan kiriman. Kesempatan di tengahmalam semalam Maya gunakan untuk membaca kesemua e-mail2 yg dikirimkan pada Maya. Terimakasih tidak terhingga pada kiriman dari pembaca blog Layar, benar2 terharu atas sokongan anda mana tidaknya blog Layar berusia tidak sampai 3 bulan. Maya tidak menyangka ada diantara pembaca yang benar2 mengikuti perkembangan Maya terutama selepas komen yang Maya berikan diblog tontonfilem.blogspot.com. Maya mohon maaf kerana tidak dapat membalas satu persatu e-mail yang dikirimkan kpd Maya namun izinkanlah Maya membalasnya/menjawabnya disini.

Maya mula mengenali apa itu tayangan gambar atau wayang ketika berusia 7 tahun dan filem pertama Maya tonton adalah filem Sound Of Music (1965) filem musikal yang menghiburkan disamping mesej kekeluargaan dan kasih sayang dalam kemelut peperangan dan hampir sebulan lamanya hidup Maya hanya dipenuhi dengan cerita filem Sound of Music!. Pasti ada yang bertanya kenapa jadi begitu dan tidakkah terlalu muda usia Maya untuk diperkenalkan dengan filem sebegini sedangkan kanak-kanak lain menonton cartoon dan Sesame Street? Sebenarnya Maya tidak mengikuti pelajaran secara formal disekolah2 seperti anda, lantaran tugas ayah sering bertukar Negara memaksa mama dan ayah memberi pendidikan kepada Maya secara Homeschooling dimana Maya belajar menerusi lesson-plan dan kurikulum yang dibuat oleh mama dan ayah selaras dengan objektif pendidikan yang diwajibkan Cuma cara pembelajaran berbeza dan waktu belajar fleksibel dengan ruang litup kajian subjek lebih luas dan elektif pendek kata Maya tidak terikat dengan cara pembelajaran disekolah dan yang penting semua subjek dikaji selidik sendiri tanpa suapan guru hanya panduan dan guide-line dari lesson-plan yang dikembangkan mengikut tahap kemampuan daN kreativiti Maya tanpa menyasar dari objektif dan standard pendidikan internasional.

Berbalik kepada filem pertama yang Maya tonton, mama telah menyediakan lesson-plan buat Maya meliputi subjek sejarah, geografi, bahasa, language art, agama, politik, psikologi, kemanusiaan dan musik sesuai dengan tahap umur Maya dan semakin Maya membesar, filem ini tetap menjadi rujukan terutama dalam biografi, senilakon dan penulisan skrip serta nota muzik. Antara tugasan yang Maya buat adalah membuat map-story bagi filem ini, mengkaji susur galur kehidupan bagi watak Mary Von Trapp dengan diakhiri menulis sendiri ending cerita ini dengan ide sendiri, membina monolog perkembangan watak pilihan berdasarkan story-map dengan menentukan dimana sepatutnya ditempatkan samada selepas atau sebelum klimaks atau dipermulaan frasa, mengkaji perbezaan antara written language dan spoken language, menambah perbendaharaan kata dengan mempelajari tatabahasa yang betul dari intonasi hinggalah pada pronunciations dan memahami emosi setiap watak dalam kesemua babak dan punca disebalik wujudnya perasaan tersebut disamping kaitannya pada keseluruhan watak serta kesan pada jalancerita.

Selain itu Maya juga diberi tugasan menyelidik lirik dan lagu dengan menyediakan senarai lagu dan dikaji dari segi dinamiknya, instrumentasinya, lirik, melodi, modality, rhythm dan tempo seterusnya mensuai-padankan lagu dengan monolog yang telah dibina diawal tadi. Lagu-lagu tersebut diteliti dari aspek muzik elemennya yang memberi reflek mood dan emosi pada watak dalam monolog yang mana musik yang dipilih akan mengiringi ketika membentangkan monolog sebagai intro atau semasa memberikan konklusi.Menerusi filem inilah pertama kalinya Maya diperkenalkan dengan piano dan nyanyian. Maya telah diajar oleh mama bagaimana menyanyi menerusi solfege syllables Do-Re-Mi dan Maya rebiu dengan ‘key of C dalam carta solfege. Disinilah permulaan Maya mengenal nota muzik dan diajar bermain piano. Mama menggunakan solfege syllables brainstorming worksheet sehingga Maya mahir mengenal hubungan antara nama ‘key’ didalam carta.

Selain itu menerusi filem pertama ini jugalah Maya mengenal negara Austria dan Jerman serta Hitler disamping sejarah, sains politik, kesan perang dan kemanusiaan. Mengkaji dan menyelidik tokoh perang Hitler serta Holocaust dengan memahami makna Anschluss membawa kepada penulisan ringkas biografi Hitler dan Holocaust serta Nazi. Mengasingkan antara fakta dan fiksi menerusi Venn Diagram yang mana Venn Diagram tersebut Maya gunakan sebagai pre-writing dalam penulisan esei bagi membandingkan kontras kedua-dua sudut fakta dan fiksi setelah Maya berusia 12tahun. Assessment Rubric antara kaedah penilaian yang mama gunakan untuk menilai tugasan Maya. Maya juga diberi penjelasan tentang agama Kristian dan fungsi ‘nun’ serta pembandingan dengan Islam dan struktur dakwah Islam. Selain itu Maya juga mempelajari tentang batas pergaulan, kasih sayang, morality dan nilai kekeluargaan.

Sejak menonton filem Sound Of Music (1965) telah menjadi rutin bagi Maya menonton dua buah filem setiap minggu samada untuk tugasan ataupun untuk waktu terluang dari Elementary, Junior High, Middle School sehinggalah High School. Maya akan menyambung lagi tulisan ini bagi membincangkan filem yang digunakan oleh mama dan ayah bagi mendidik Maya. #219. Skoop : Hype - A Swedish Director’s Literary Lens

At the age of 77 the Swedish director Jan Troell — after a four-decade career that includes a best picture prize at the Berlin Film Festival, a Golden Palm nomination at Cannes and a best picture Oscar nomination — is among the world’s most distinguished filmmakers. He is also practically invisible in the United States.

Only two of his films, the well-regarded 1996 “Hamsun,” about the Norwegian novelist Knut Hamsun, and “Hurricane,” a misfire from his brief sojourn in Hollywood in the late 1970s, are available here on DVD. His masterpieces — “The Emigrants,” “The New Land,” “The Flight of the Eagle” — have not been in print since the days of the laser disc.

It’s a state of affairs that can drive his American fans to distraction but that does not appear to hold any particular interest for Mr. Troell.

“I haven’t really thought about that,” Mr. Troell (pronounced tro-el) said by phone from his home near Malmo recently before politely moving the discussion to more relevant topics, like the opening in New York and Los Angeles on Friday of his latest movie, “Everlasting Moments,” a 2009 Golden Globe nominee for best foreign-language film. It will be the first Troell movie released in the United States in 12 years, but who’s counting?

Mr. Troell’s relative obscurity here might seem surprising given the splash he made in America with his third film, “The Emigrants,” in 1972. The story of 19th-century farmers making an epic journey from southern Sweden to the forests of Minnesota earned four Oscar nominations that year: for best adapted screenplay, director, actress (Liv Ullmann) and picture. It is still one of only eight foreign-language films to get a best-picture nod.

But possible reasons for his low profile, beyond the natural reserve evident in conversation, come to mind easily. There’s the Ingmar Bergman factor, for one thing. Perhaps there has been room in the American consciousness for only one 20th-century Swedish cinematic genius. Mr. Troell, of course, was quick to dismiss the notion that he had worked in his countryman’s shadow.

“I would prefer to say I’ve been in the sun of Bergman,” he said. “His films have always inspired me.”

And Mr. Troell has not been prolific, making 12 features in 43 years. He said that with documentaries and television films he had worked more or less steadily but acknowledged that his pace was deliberate.

“It has taken a very long time for several of the films to be financed,” he said, “mainly because I have not been what film companies usually are looking for. And I’ve been quite expensive sometimes too.”

That comes with the territory when you have a fondness for making long, meticulously designed period dramas like “The Emigrants” and its sequel, “The New Land,” both three hours plus, or the two-and-a-half-hour polar exploration story “The Flight of the Eagle,” set in 1897 and requiring the re-creation of a balloon flight over the Arctic ice cap. There are no car chases or costumed superheroes here, though Mr. Troell’s avoidance of mass-market material is paired with an extraordinarily accessible, straightforward narrative style.

“Everlasting Moments” is a period film too, set around World War I, though at 131 minutes it is practically a short by Troell standards. It differs from his earlier American releases in being primarily a domestic drama, tracking the life of a poor Malmo family.

But the themes of heroism and fearless exploration that run through Mr. Troell’s work are present in the character of the struggling wife and mother Maria Larsson, played by the Finnish actress Maria Heiskanen. Like the emigrant Karl-Oskar, the balloonist S. A. Andree and the aviatrix Elsa Andersson (in the 2001 “As White as in Snow,” never released in America), Maria is an adventurer, even if she travels nowhere. Her vehicle is the bulky camera she wins in a raffle.

For Mr. Troell the story of how photography changes Maria’s life was doubly appealing: the character was based on his wife’s great-aunt, and her journey mirrored his own.

“I started when I was 14,” he said. “I was given a used camera almost the same as the one she uses, 9-by-12-centimeter glass plate. For me it was a similar adventure as it must have been for Maria, the miracle, the mystery of the images coming in the red light” of the darkroom.

Mr. Troell worked as a still photographer and a schoolteacher before breaking into movies, and it’s tempting to see the mark of those professions in his filmmaking style: humanist, literary, cerebral yet fast moving, with a constant emphasis on clear storytelling.

It’s an aesthetic, and an ethos, summed up by the photography studio owner played by Jesper Christensen in “Everlasting Moments”: “What do you see as you look through the camera, Maria? You see a world, there to be explored — to preserve, to describe. Those who’ve seen it — they cannot merely close their eyes. You can’t turn back."

There are more explorations in Mr. Troell’s future, despite some issues with hearing and memory. (Asked what movies he’d liked recently, he said the titles rarely stayed in his head, but then quickly summoned up “Lars and the Real Girl” — “Really unusual” — and “Frozen River.”)

His new project, a script he is composing with the Danish screenwriter Klaus Rifbjerg, does not sound destined to raise his profile in the United States. It’s another period drama, set in Sweden during World War II, and its protagonist, the real-life anti-Nazi activist Torgny Segerstedt, is the most anachronistic of heroes: a crusading newspaper editor.

As if that’s not enough, Mr. Troell threw in a last notion: “I’m thinking of making this one in black and white.”

Actor will receive Lifetime Achievement Award.

Michael Caine will receive the ShoWest 2009 lifetime achievement award at the annual gathering of theater owners in Las Vegas. Kudo will be presented during ShoWest's closing night banquet on April 2, two weeks before the limited opening of Caine starrer "Is Anybody There?"

Big Beach, which co-produced the movie with Heyday Films and BBC Films, will release in North America."He simply does it all, and he does it all so incredibly well, be it comedy, drama or action," ShoWest co-managing director Mitch Neuhauser said of Caine's long career onscreen. ShoWest begins March 30.

#217. Berita Filem : Chinese director plans film on 1976 quake

HONG KONG – One of China's most successful commercial directors plans to make a 150 million Chinese yuan ($22 million) movie about the country's deadliest earthquake in modern times, which killed at least 240,000 people, a production company said Thursday.

Feng Xiaogang plans to start shooting the film about the 1976 quake in northeastern Tangshan city in July and releasing it on July 28, 2010 — the 34th anniversary of the natural disaster, production company Huayi Brothers said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Thursday.

The statement quoted Feng as saying no actors have been cast yet.

The 1976 quake and the temblor in China's southwestern Sichuan province on May 12, 2008, which left nearly 90,000 people dead or missing, are the deadliest in the country's modern history.

Huayi Brothers said in the statement the movie, called "Tangshan Earthquake" in Chinese, is a co-production with state-run China Film Group and the city of Tangshan, which is contributing tens of millions of yuan (millions of U.S. dollars) in funding.

Feng's credits include "Big Shot's Funeral," "A World Without Thieves," "The Banquet" and most recently, the romantic comedy "If You Are the One."

#216. Berita Filem : Indian politicians lean on 'Slumdog' in campaigns

NEW DELHI – India's election campaign is going to the "Slumdogs."

It was initially panned in the country it portrays. But after eight Oscars, "Slumdog Millionaire" is such a sensation that India's main political parties are fighting over the right to play its signature song at campaign rallies. One politician made a show of catching a matinee of the film — arriving in a rickshaw surrounded by reporters. Another longtime government critic said the film's portrayal of Mumbai's shantytowns sums up the current administration's failures.

The ruling Congress party has bought the exclusive rights to play "Jai Ho," which translates as "Be Victorious," at their election rallies, said senior party official Digvijay Singh. The song, played on the closing dance sequence of the film, won Best Song at the Academy Awards. Congress plans to play the song at rallies and in commercials leading up to the national elections, which will be held in five phases beginning in April at the end of the ruling party's five-year term.

However, the main opposition, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Partym was not happy with Congress appropriating "Jai Ho" as its own.

"Anyone should be able to use the song. 'Jai Ho' should not belong to any one; it belongs to the country," Atul Shah, a member of the BJP campaign committee, told the NDTV news channel.

But the BJP will probably be frustrated.

Harindra Singh, the managing director of the Percept advertising agency, which negotiated the deal, said the party has bought "exclusive rights for political exploitation" for one year, meaning that no other political party could use the song. He declined to say how much they paid.

The film, which won eight Oscars including best film and best director, received negative reviews when it premiered in India for its graphic portrayal of Mumbai's slums and focus on poverty in the country.

But since its success at the Academy Awards, the country has embraced the film, from British director Danny Boyle, as its own.

Other politicians and parties have sought to associate themselves with the film, hoping some of its magic will rub off on their campaigns.

In the northern state of Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar — a member of the BJP-allied Janata Dal (United) party — took a very public midday break Thursday to see the film.

He even abandoned his motorcade to ride a bicycle rickshaw to the cinema, as security guards and reporters jogged along beside.

"Oh, come on," he said with a wry smile when asked if it was an election stunt. "I'm just going to see 'Slumdog' and felt like taking a rickshaw."

Still, at least one opposition politician, however, said Congress was welcome to take credit for the film.

#215. Berita Filem : Italian sex-comedy director dies

ROME – Italian director Salvatore Samperi, best known for erotic comedies that challenged the morals of Italy's middle class, has died at age 64, his family said Thursday. Samperi died Wednesday, said his brother Jadran Samperi, declining to give the cause of the death. The director died in his house on Lake Bracciano, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Rome, according to the ANSA news agency.

Samperi's movies offered a social critique of the Italian bourgeoisie, often through the lens of sex. Critics say his best works explored the forbidden passions and relationships within middle-class families as a way to show what he saw as their decadence and hypocrisy.

In what is considered by many critics his best movie, "Grazie, Zia" ("Thank You, Aunt"), Samperi tells the story of a rich young man who engages in a sexually charged relationship with his aunt. The movie, released in 1968, marked Samperi's directorial debut at age 24.

The movie "translated the anxiety and unrest of the time into an accessible movie," film critic Fabio Ferzetti wrote in Il Messaggero newspaper Thursday.

Samperi's biggest success came a few years later, with "Malizia" ("Malice"), which turned Italian actress Laura Antonelli into an erotic icon, thanks to her role as a sexy, socially climbing maid. The 1973 movie was seen as scandalous but was also a commercial hit and became a cultural sensation.

Born in the northeastern Italian city of Padua, Samperi briefly studied literature and philosophy before turning to cinema. His career also included flops, including a sequel to "Malizia," made about 20 years after the original.

Samperi had failed to score a success for many years, and recently he had worked primarily for TV.

Samperi is survived by his wife and a son. A funeral is scheduled for Friday, his brother said.

#214. Cinema : Buddy caper that goes nowhere

‘ROLE Models’ is not likely to be the model comedy for Malaysian viewers. It is too American, too derivative and not funny enough for our taste.It may, however, go the way of cult movies — and end up as the favourite DVD movie for “cosplay” (costume-play) and live-action role-playing fans.

Directed and co-written by relative newcomer David Wain, Role Models is a predictable buddy caper with a message about the importance of unconditional love. Danny (Paul Rudd) and Wheeler (Seann William Scott) are two travelling salesmen who go from school to school selling a brand of energy drink (obviously inspired by Red Bull) to children as a substitute for illegal drugs.Wheeler thinks his job is fun but Danny is very much aware that he is heading nowhere.

When a problem in his relationship with his girlfriend (Elizabeth Banks) pushes Danny past breaking point, the two men land in trouble with the law.

To avoid going to jail, they have to join a programme called Sturdy Wings, where they play big brother to lonely children.

Wheeler is assigned a foul-mouthed pre-teen named Ronnie (Bobb’e J. Thompson), while Danny gets Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse of Superbad), a teenage nerd who is obsessed with medieval fantasy role-playing.

Of course, these pairings do not start well and their ensuing “sputters” provide some crazy situations, especially between the sex-crazed Wheeler and vile-tempered Ronnie.

Soon, however, the comedy strays into drama, and even documentary (the live-action role-playing) territory, and the laughs peter out.

Wain and his co-scripters (Rudd, Ken Marino, Tim Dowling, W. Blake Herron) have not bothered to develop Danny and Wheeler’s roles further other than to portray them as “big brothers”. It is as if they have no life other than doing the role model thing!

Role Models reminds us of Judd Apatow’s comedies (such as Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin).

Indeed, it is written by Apatow’s usual gang of collaborators but here he is conspicuously missing.

Role Models has none of the subplot adornments (or “bling-bling”) that lend colour and sparkle to Apatow’s efforts. Its ending, especially, looks shoddily contrived and phoney.

The cast, however, is strong. Rudd and Scott pair off well as “opposites”; Banks is credible as successful lawyer Beth who is tired of Danny’s grouchiness; and the children, Thompson and Mintz-Plasse, make a good account of themselves.

However, the one performance that stands out is from Jane Lynch whose zany portrayal of Gayle Sweeny, the Sturdy Wings community service boss, is demented enough to evoke plenty of chuckles.

Produced on a budget of US$28 million (RM98 million), Role Models has collected US$86.5 million (RM302 million) so far. Not bad for something so uninspired and tepid.

#213. Cinema : A barber and his superstar friend

A BARBER has a superstar as a friend. But the superstar does not know that his childhood buddy is in dire straits financially.This is the gist of the movie, which has been made in several languages since the original Katha Parayumbol (2007) came out in Malayalam and won actor Sreenivasan the best scriptwriter award in Kerala state.

Mammootty was the superstar in the movie.

It came out as Kathanayuku in Telugu and Kuselan in Tamil, with Rajnikanth as the superstar and Pasupathy as the barber.
In Billu, Shah Rukh Khan is the superstar and Ifshan Khan (who was recently seen as the police officer in Slumdog Millionaire) is the barber.

Kuselan was not the success it was expected to be. Billu (shortened from Billu Barber after hairstylists objected to being called barbers), meanwhile, has had only average reception at the box-office so far.

Malayalam-Hindi-Tamil movie director Priyadarshan has avoided all the pitfalls that director P. Vasu encountered while making Kuselan by giving equal prominence to both Shah Rukh and Ifshan.

In Kuselan, Rajnikanth only seems to be making a cameo appearance. In Billu, Shah Rukh’s presence is felt throughout the movie.

Not only that, Priyadarshan has also roped in four of the hottest Hindi heroines of our time: Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Kareena Kapoor. You will not recognise Lara here. She plays the barber’s wife, who’s also the mother of two small children. What a transformation from her glamorous roles, but she plays it well.

The other three heroines appear in dance scenes that the superstar is shooting in the barber’s village. Irrfan shines as the poor guy who is caught in the middle when the superstar drops by the village. The tight security around the actor prevents him from coming into contact with the former. Once the news leaks that the poor barber is the superstar’s childhood friend, everyone hounds the barber in hopes of meeting the superstar.

Such is the fascination and hold that cinema and the stars have on the people, especially in the rural areas. That’s why India has become the largest producer of films in the world.

Music is scored by Pritam Singh, with the infectious Billu Bhayankar standing out. As usual, Manikandan handles the cameras superbly.

There is plenty of humour throughout the movie and a little touch of pathos. But Priyadarshan has definitely made Billu an enjoyable movie. Even after watching Kuselan, Billu is still a joy to catch at the cinema.

IF you think that Hannah Montana is a town in America and Miley Cyrus is the name of a species of plant, this movie is totally not for you. However, if you have children below the age of 16 and you want to take an interest in their musical interests, you should give this concert a try — or at least continue reading this review.

The Jonas Brothers are an American pop-rock group who became popular on the Disney Channel network, circa 2007.Hailing from Wyckoff, New Jersey, the band consists of Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas. Last summer, they starred in the Disney Channel movie Camp Rock.They have released three albums: It’s About Time (2006), Jonas Brothers (2007), and A Little Bit Longer (2008).

Recently, the group was nominated for Best New Artiste at the 51st Grammy Awards, but lost to Adele Laurie Blue Adkins.

This “rockumentary” is helmed by Bruce Hendricks, who had also directed the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert last year.

The brothers were the opening act while on tour with Cyrus.

This 3D experience comprises concert segments shot during the brothers’ Burning Up tour in Anaheim, California (home of Disneyland), and at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Hendricks opens the movie with glimpses into the boy’s lifestyle — with shots of wake-up calls by their bodyguard “Big Rob” Feggans, a breakfast briefing, and of the brothers fleeing hordes of screaming teenybopper fans — a’la the Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night.

Why, Hendricks even includes a shot of the boys watching a TV clip of the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964! These sequences are in 2D.

You need to put on the 3D glasses (which are quite comfortable) for the concert numbers. The centrepieces are the new songs: Love Is On Its Way and Live To Party.

If the boys lack vocal range, they make up for it with high energy performances, glitz and gimmicks. There’s even a bit of gymnastics, with the brothers doing cartwheels and flip-flops on stage.

Playing with digital 3D, the directors of photography, Mitchell Amundsen and Reed Smoot, could not resist having drumsticks and guitar picks thrown at our eyes. At one stage, the boys shoot foam from water hoses at the receptive concert crowd.

Their guest stars include Demi Lovato (singing her Camp Rock duet), Taylor Swift and bodyguard Feggans who does a rap number.

At 76 minutes, the film feels rather draggy, especially when Hendricks includes interviews with fans and Jonas Brothers impersonators.

However, he saves their most familiar hits, S.O.S and Burnin’ Up, for the later part of the show.

Parents should understand that little girls wanna have fun. This concert is as good and clean as fun can get.

#211. Berita Filem : Watchmen on the silver screen

Alan Moore’s one-of-a-kind graphic novel Watchmen has finally found its way onto the silver screen.

Being a vigilante with noble intent – to serve all that is good and right – is an idea that has prevailed in comic books right from the start. Even if these caped crusaders ignore the law, they are regarded as heroes nonetheless.Then we have Watchmen, the renowned 1986 graphic novel written by Alan Moore, illustrated by Dave Gibbons, which adapts the superhero types, only to twist them into something much more sinister and sombre.

Watchmen revolves around a group of masked men and women who have taken it upon themselves to protect their neighbourhood. These people with extreme personalities formed a league in 1940 called Minutemen, which was continued by the younger generation (known as Watchmen) right into the Vietnam War and well into the 1980s.

Over the years, however, people have begun to become wary of these costumed avengers. Far from being celebrated, these costumed heroes have become objects of suspicion and ridicule. They are feared, ignored, and ultimately asked, “Who watches the Watchmen?” as they keep taking the law into their own hands, with sometimes dire consequences. Hence, one day they’re forced to hang up their masks for good. Sadly this situation has caused more damage than expected with these people and some of them find it hard to get back to normal life.

On one level, the story is really a microscopic examination of what happens if costumed fighters do exist set in an alternate 1985 in the United States, where Richard Nixon is still President for more than three terms.

On another, it’s a murder mystery as the former masked heroes are being offed one by one. The novel also touches on politics as the United States and Russia are on the brink of a nuclear war.

There’s also ... erm, actually there are far too many layers to the novel. Each panel is compact and filled with so many characters and subplots (stories within stories within stories) that it’s quite a strenuous exercise to complete even just one chapter, as absorbing as the novel is.

hus, it makes perfect sense that Watchmen has been the only graphic novel to ever receive a Hugo Award, annually given out for best science fiction or fantasy works.

For 23 years it seemed as if the graphic novel was unfilmable. According to one Los Angeles Times report, early screenplay costs and abandoned preproduction fees have totalled close to US$10mil, and no fewer than four studios have worked on the movie over the decades, including 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, Paramount and Universal. Forsaken film adaptations, it was reported, include versions from directors Terry Gilliam (Brazil), Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum) and screenwriter David Hayter (X-Men), with countless script revisions along the way.

The project finally landed with Watchmen fan Zack Snyder (of 300 fame). But just months before the release of the film, it became embroiled in a court case (between Fox and Warner Brothers) which ended with an understanding that would benefit all parties involved.

Despite its popularity worldwide, most of the actors portraying the characters in the book had very little knowledge of it.

In an interview provided by the film distributor United International Pictures (UIP), Billy Crudup who stepped into the role of Dr Manhattan (a blue being and the only super-powered hero in the book) was quoted as saying: “I was sent the script and told that it was based on a graphic novel, and I had all my pre-conceived notions of what the script was going to be like. (But) within the first couple of pages, it was clear that this was a different kind of endeavour with a lot of complexity and sophistication. And so, I think that immediate surprise with the material ignited my interest pretty early on.”

He added: “It imagines what people who dress up to fight crime might actually be like. What, psychologically, would be going on in someone who decided to dress up in a costume and take on thugs? There are obviously some people who are mentally imbalanced and sociopathic, and they’re not all fighting for truth, justice and the American way. I thought that was a really exciting idea to start a superhero myth story.”

Crudup’s co-star Matthew Goode read Beano and Dandy but not many other comic books when he was growing up; of Watchmen he had no inkling at all. After reading it through, Goode had only one reaction: “It was quite jaw-dropping really. It’s so intelligently written and complicated and pertinent to a lot of stuff that’s still going on today.”

In the film, Goode portrays Ozymandias, the world’s smartest man who has honed his physical capabilities to be extraordinary. “I had no conception of what was going on when I auditioned. I was thinking who on Earth would cast me in that role? I don’t know anything about him, I’m 15 years too young and I’m not blond and I am pretty scrawny.”

Well, Snyder did, and Goode had to get into shape for Ozymandias’ athletic physique. Before the shoot, he underwent a fitness and training regime, three times a day.

If Goode found the physical aspect of his character tough, Crudup was at a disadvantage when it came to finding Dr Manhattan’s voice. Crudup explained: “It is a weird thing, as an actor, to not be able to connect the voice and the body, and so to never have been in possession of the body that this voice is supposed to come out of is a really strange balancing act.”

The cast and crew spent six months in Vancouver shooting the film, and it has been a labour of love for all of them. Snyder’s vision of the film is said to be a faithful version of the book. There are some bits that have been left out, but hopefully, the movie has integrated the novel’s spirit.

Crudup concluded: “(Watchmen) aspires to a level of complexity and sophistication that appears infrequently in this genre. ... This script certainly did it for me but there is no way of knowing how a script will translate into a finished product. For sure, I am not a filmmaker and don’t have that ability so I don’t know how it will translate, but my suspicion is that they gave it a good chance.”

Watchmen opens at cinemas nationwide today.

#210. Skoop : Formula terbaru A. Razak

TIGA pelakon ini pertama kali dipertemukan menerusi filem seram, Rasukan Ablasa yang sudah pun mula ditayangkan bermula 26 Februari lalu. Malah, filem berkenaan juga merupakan filem seram dan thriller terbaru arahan pengarah prolifik, Prof. Madya A. Razak Mohaideen selepas Potret Mistik (2005), Tujuh Perhentian (2004) dan Mistik (2003). Bukan itu sahaja, filem ini juga telah berdepan dengan beberapa masalah sehingga menyebabkan ia diperap selama hampir tiga tahun sebelum menemui penonton tempatan.

Antara pelakon yang membintangi filem Rasukan Ablasa yang membawa maksud bisikan iblis ini ialah Fouziah Gous, Gambit, Mohd. Hafiz Mohd. Nafiah, Almy Nadia, Fairul serta beberapa pelakon undangan seperti Datuk Jalaluddin Hassan, Yusry Abdul Halim (Yusry KRU) dan Aznah Hamid. Membicarakan tentang filem yang diarahkan oleh Razak sering kali mengundang polemik yang tidak berkesudahan. Seperti biasa,filem-filem arahannya sentiasa mendapat kritikan yang agak hebat daripada pengkritik filem mahupun peminat.

Namun, tanpa disedari ramai, kelebihan berlakon di bawah arahan pengarah filem yang juga pensyarah ini sebenarnya terletak kepada kelas lakonan secara insentif demi memberikan pendedahan kepada pelakon-pelakonnya sebelum turun ke lokasi.

Bukan sekadar omong kosong mahupun untuk memuji tetapi perkara ini sendiri diakui oleh tiga pelakon utama Rasukan Ablasa yang tidak lokek berkongsi cerita tentang pengalaman mereka berlakon di dalam filem ini.

Dalam satu pertemuan dengan mereka baru-baru ini, Fouziah Gous, Mohd. Hafiz M. Hanafiah dan Gambit melahirkan rasa bertuah mereka apabila menerima ilmu yang cukup berharga daripada pengarah dan juga krew filem Rasukan Ablasa.

Filem pertama Fouziah

Bekas pramugari Penerbangan Malaysia (MAS) ini tidak segan silu memberitahu, saat pertama kali berlakon di bawah arahan Razak, dia benar-benar kekok di lokasi sementelah Rasukan Ablasa merupakan filem pertama lakonannya.

Sudahlah baru dan masih mentah, ditawarkan pula menjadi pelakon utama dan jelas Fouziah, perkara itu sememangnya mengganggu fikirannya di awal penglibatannya dalam filem berkenaan.

“Masa itu saya betul-betul kosong dan tidak tahu selok-belok tentang dunia lakonan. Bukan itu sahaja, ketika itu, saya masih lagi aktif bekerja sebagai pramugari dan saya terkejut apabila tawaran itu datang kepada saya.

“Demi kerana itu juga, saya mengambil cuti ketika itu semata-mata mahu memberikan fokus kepada watak Elly. Saya tidak menyesal kerana apa yang saya peroleh sebelum dan sepanjang penggambaran filem ini cukup-cukup berharga,” cerita Fouziah membuka bicara.

Diwajibkan menghadiri kelas lakonan dan motivasi di bawah kelolaan Razak, Fouziah menjelaskan, perkara itu sebenarnya telah banyak meningkatkan keyakinan dirinya untuk beraksi sebaik mungkin dalam filem Rasukan Ablasa.

Katanya lagi, Razak banyak memberikan kelebihan dari segi berkongsi idea sesama pelakon dalam usaha memberikan mutu lakonan yang terbaik.

“Memang rasa tercabar apabila perlu duduk di dalam hutan seorang diri pada pukul tiga pagi hanya semata-mata untuk membiasakan diri dengan keadaan itu.

“Saya percaya selama dua minggu menjalani bimbingan ini banyak mengajar saya untuk menyelami erti sebuah lakonan,” ujarnya yang juga pengacara bersama untuk rancangan Roda Impian.

Bermula dengan filem Bujang Senang sebagai pelakon pembantu, gadis berdarah kacukan Cina, Pakistan dan Melayu ini sudah bersedia dikritik kerana dengan kritikan, dia tahu kelemahan dirinya dan seterusnya memperbaiki untuk menjadi lebih baik.

“Memang saya takut peminat dan masyarakat akan cuba membandingkan lakonan saya dalam filem ini dengan apa yang telah saya lakukan kini. Tetapi, apabila difikirkan balik, Rasukan Ablasa merupakan filem pertama saya dan pastinya, banyak kelemahan yang ada dalam diri saya ketika itu.

“Namun, saya bersikap rasional dan optimis dengan setiap kritikan kerana saya tahu ia adalah untuk kebaikan saya,” jelasnya penuh yakin.

Peluang Gambit kembang bakat

Jejaka berwajah Cina ini mula mencuri perhatian apabila wajahnya dapat ditatap menerusi filem Cinta arahan Kabir Bhatia pada tahun 2006.

Meskipun, wataknya kecil dan tidak meninggalkan impak yang besar, lakonannya dalam Filem Terbaik Festival Filem Malaysia Ke-20 itu menjadi buah mulut orang.

Manakan tidak, lakonannya dilabelkan sebagai kayu, keras dan tiada emosi seterusnya, dia dikatakan menceburkan diri dalam bidang ini hanya untuk mempertaruhkan wajah kacaknya itu.

Namun bagi Saifullah Rosli atau lebih dikenali dengan panggilan Gambit ini, dia melihat itu sebagai satu perkara yang cukup positif.

“Saya sedar saya masih baru dan masih banyak lagi peluang bagi saya memperbaiki segala kelemahan untuk meningkatkan kualiti lakonan saya.

“Disebabkan itu, apabila dapat peluang berlakon dalam filem Rasukan Ablasa ini, ia bagaikan satu peluang keemasan yang tidak seharusnya saya lepaskan. Filem ini juga menyaksikan buat pertama kalinya saya memegang teraju utama,” kata jejaka berusia 24 tahun ini.

Selepas Cinta, dia membintangi sebuah lagi filem hebat, Susuk sebagai teman lelaki kepada Diana Rafar yang ditayangkan pada tahun lalu.

Menyambung kembali bicara tentang Rasukan Ablasa, Gambit menjelaskan, dia sudah memberikan lakonan yang terbaik menerusi dua watak yang dipegangnya dalam filem tersebut.

Apatah lagi, dengan kecederaan lutut yang dialaminya ketika itu, ada kalanya ia bagaikan menyukarkan pergerakannya lebih-lebih lagi ketika membawakan watak lasak.

“Saya juga berasa cemburu melihat pelakon lain yang berpeluang mengikuti kelas bimbingan lebih awal daripada saya. Tetapi itu tidak bermakna saya tidak mempelajari apa-apa.

“Meskipun mendapat skrip pada saat akhir, tetapi dengan bantuan pengarah, saya dapat melakukan seperti mana yang diinginkannya.

“Bekerja dengannya juga tidak sukar kerana dia begitu bebas menerima idea para pelakonnya. Dia juga bukan seperti pengarah lain yang hanya bertindak sebagai pengarah sahaja tanpa berkongsi idea dan pendapat dengan pelakonnya,” luahnya jujur.

Satu yang pasti tentang Gambit adalah dia tidak kisah dengan pandangan masyarakat terhadap dirinya apabila dia dilabelkan dengan pelbagai gelaran.

Sebaliknya, dia melihat itu sebagai satu cabaran untuknya mendaki anak tangga untuk menuju ke menara sebagai seorang pelakon.

“Saya tidak pernah meminta untuk memegang watak utama sepanjang masa. Cuma, saya mahu peluang terus diberikan kepada saya untuk mengembangkan bakat saya,” katanya yang memiliki syarikat sendiri, Eight Ball Productions Sdn. Bhd., yang sudah dua tahun beroperasi.

Hafiz tidak pernah menyesal

Pemuda ini sememangnya cukup sinonim dengan filem-filem Razak kerana jika ada yang perasan, wajahnya pasti akan kelihatan dalam setiap arahan Razak.

Antaranya adalah Bujang Senang, Nana Tanjung, Nana Tanjung 2, Kuliah Cinta dan Otai yang menyaksikan dirinya beraksi sebagai pelakon pembantu dan undangan sahaja.

Namun setelah hampir empat tahun menimba ilmu bersama Razak, barulah peluang menjadi pelakon utama datang kepadanya.

Ditanya mengapakah begitu lama peluang itu datang kepadanya, jawapan yang diberikan Hafiz sungguh optimis.

“Saya tahu Prof memerhatikan kerja-kerja saya dari jauh dan saya tahu dia mahu saya belajar dari bawah sebelum peluang berlakon dalam filem Rasukan Ablasa ini datang kepada saya.

“Perjalanan saya begitu jauh dan bersama dengan Prof telah banyak pengalaman yang saya kutip sehingga saya pernah menjadi pembantu pengarah bagi filem Otai. Saya tidak pernah menyesal kalau peluang itu lambat tiba kepada saya,” jelas Hafiz lagi.

Walaupun sudah biasa dengan Razak, Hafiz tidak menafikan cabaran beraksi dalam Rasukan Ablasa tetap wujud.

Apatah lagi, ia merupakan kali pertama memperlihatkan dirinya sebagai teraju utama, Hafiz memberitahu wataknya sebagai Jimi bukanlah semudah yang disangka.

“Transisi watak saya yang saya bawakan dalam filem ini membuatkan saya begitu gementar pada mulanya. Kerana dia adalah pencetus kepada segala permasalahan yang berlaku. Tetapi mujur dengan bimbingan dan tunjuk ajar oleh Prof, saya mampu melakukannya,” katanya.

Berjanji tidak akan pernah lupa akan jasa sifunya itu, Hafiz juga memberitahu, kerana gurunya itu jugalah namanya kini semakin hari semakin dikenali.

Lebih-lebih lagi katanya, impak yang terhasil menerusi watak Fazli yang dilakonkannya dalam siri drama dan filem Dunia Baru.

“Saya mengharapkan sokongan yang berpanjangan dan demi cinta saya pada bidang ini, saya akan melakukan yang terbaik untuk terus memahatkan nama saya,” ujarnya.

#209. Isu : P Ramlee bakal dapat gelaran Tun

Pengiktirafan hargai jasa tidak ternilai

PADA 8 Januari lalu, ruangan ini pernah mengulas mengenai cadangan Presiden Majlis Muzik Malaysia yang juga Pengerusi Majlis Artis Hiburan Tanah Air (Mahkota), Datuk A Rahman Hassan yang menyifatkan sudah tiba masanya, P Ramlee (Allahyarham) dikurniakan darjah kebesaran yang membawa gelaran Tun.

Dengan tajuk ‘Kewajaran anugerah gelaran Tun untuk P Ramlee’, ruangan ini turut menyatakan hujah bahawa keperluan memberi anugerah gelaran Tun penting sebagai simbolik dan mengambil kira kesan yang diberikan menerusi karya yang ditinggalkan P Ramlee kepada rakyat di negara ini kerana ia meninggalkan benchmark terbaik untuk mengukur hasil sebuah karya bermutu tinggi dan memberi kesan positif kepada pemikiran dan kehidupan masyarakat.

Cadangan itu harus diambil kira dari segi menilai, meninjau dan mengkaji semula pencapaian dan sumbangan bakti serta warisan seni yang ditinggalkan P Ramlee nyata begitu besar terhadap pembangunan jiwa dan sosial rakyat kerana karyanya mendidik dan mengajak masyarakat untuk mengerti sebuah kehidupan, keadilan, maruah diri, perpaduan, patriotik, semangat moral dan menghormati budaya bangsa.

Hasrat itu nampaknya bakal menjadi kenyataan kerana dalam Dewan Rakyat kelmarin, Kementerian Perpaduan, Kebudayaan, Kesenian dan Warisan mahu mencadangkan kepada pihak yang berkenaan untuk mengurniakan anugerah dengan gelaran Tun kepada Seniman Agung itu.

Timbalan Menterinya, Teng Boon Soon, berkata pihak kementerian menyokong penuh gelaran Tun untuk P Ramlee setelah mengambil kira jasa besarnya dalam bidang kesenian dan kebudayaan di negara ini, malah ia terus dihargai dan dikenang sehingga kini. Katanya, kehebatannya itu bukan sekadar berlakon, menghasilkan skrip dan mengarah filem, tetapi juga bermutu dari segi pengkaryaan menghasilkan lagu, seni suara, menjadi pemuzik dan pelawak.

Cadangan itu juga sebagai menjawab saranan Ahli Parlimen Pasir Mas, Datuk Ibrahim Ali di Dewan Rakyat yang berpendapat gelaran Tan Sri untuk P Ramlee ketika ini tidak mencukupi kerana gelaran itu juga sudah diberikan kepada beberapa seniman lain walaupun sumbangan mereka tidak sebesar Allahyarham.

Ini bererti jika saranan kementerian itu diterima pihak berkenaan, maka gelaran Tun kepada kepada P Ramlee akan dibuat secara posthumous, iaitu selepas hampir 36 tahun beliau meninggal dunia. Gelaran Tan Sri yang diperoleh Allahyarham dulu pun diberikan secara posthumous, selepas 17 tahun kematian beliau, diberikan pada 1990 oleh Yang di-Pertuan Agong ketika itu, Sultan Azlan Shah.

Memang wajar dan selayaknya Allahyarham dikurniakan gelaran Tun. Kenangan, penghargaan dan pengiktirafan untuk jasa bakti dan sumbangan besar P Ramlee dalam bidang perfileman, muzik dan seni budaya di negara ini seharusnya berterusan. Ini mengambil kira kesan kebanyakan karya filem dan muzik P Ramlee meninggalkan pengajaran kuat pada masyarakat, malah menjadi simbol perpaduan rakyat di negara ini kerana karyanya turut disukai pelbagai lapisan kaum, usia dan kelas masyarakat.

Pada 29 Mei ini, genap 36 tahun Allahyarham bersemadi dan selama itu jugalah namanya terus harum kerana sering disebut di kalangan masyarakat apatah lagi karya muzik dan filemnya berterusan dan saban hari dapat ditonton dan didengar peminatnya serta generasi baru kini. Sekali fikir kehebatan P Ramlee ini lebih dikenang, dihargai dan disebut sepanjang masa berbanding tokoh dalam bidang lain yang juga banyak berjasa untuk negara kerana khazanah seni P Ramlee itu sendiri yang menyebabkan ia sering mendapat perhatian dan terus disajikan kepada masyarakat. menerusi media elektronik.

Memang benar apabila gelaran Tun diberikan kepada P Ramlee ia membuktikan kedudukannya diletakkan di tempat lebih tinggi dalam industri hiburan dan seni budaya di negara ini sekali gus tidak mampu disaingi oleh mana-mana artis atau anak seni lain, malah sehingga kini kita belum menemui bakat hebat di kalangan artis zaman alaf baru yang mampu setanding Seniman Agung itu.

Memang secara logik sepatutnya sudah lama sepatutnya kita meletakkan pengiktirafan tertinggi kepada P Ramlee atas nama rakaman penghargaan tidak ternilai ke atas jasanya kerana Allahyarham meninggalkan khazanah dan warisan seni yang tidak tidak ternilai harganya - juga tidak akan dapat ditandingi mana-mana anak seni lain kerana karya P Ramlee walaupun bukan semua tetapi kebanyakannya terus relevan dan melangkaui zaman kerana terus disukai sampai sekarang terutama dari aspek kritikan sosial dan politik, peradaban, kemanusiaan, kekeluargaan dan kasih sayang.

Penganugerahan gelaran Tun kepada P Ramlee kelak juga bakal memberi satu inspirasi dan kebanggaan buat masyarakat kerana dalam bidang seni budaya dan industri hiburan di negara ini ada satu contoh terpuji dan hebat yang seharusnya dijadikan ikon seni terbaik. Sudah tentu juga anak seni yang ada di Malaysia akan berasakan lebih dihargai dan disanjung kerana akhirnya ada satu contoh seorang anak seni yang mempunyai bakat luar biasa dan genius diiktiraf oleh negara dan bangsanya, setanding tokoh lain dalam bidang profesional lain.

Sehingga hari ini industri seni budaya dan hiburan di Malaysia masih gagal menemui pengkarya yang boleh menyamai kehebatan P Ramlee. Malah, tidak keterlaluan jika dikatakan separuh kejayaan P Ramlee pun belum ada jika mengikut kayu ukur pencapaian anak seni zaman sekarang meskipun ramai anak seni dan artis sekarang yang terpelajar, popular dan menjadi kaya raya.

Sewajarnya juga Pustaka Peringatan P Ramlee yang terletak di Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, seharusnya dinaikkan taraf dan ditambahkan lagi koleksi serta bahan pamerannya supaya ia lebih daya tarikan untuk generasi baru serta pelancong untuk mengenal secara lebih dekat mengenai diri dan peribadi insan bernama P Ramlee. Pustaka yang wujud itu tidak seharusnya sekadar ‘janji ada’ sebaliknya harus mempunyai pelbagai kegiatan dan dibuat promosi. Nama P Ramlee akan terus hidup di hati peminat dan masyarakat selagi filem dan muziknya bertakhta di hati mereka.

PENGGEMAR drama bersiri tempatan pastinya tidak sabar untuk mengikuti cerita terbaru yang bakal mengisi tiga slot utama di TV3 iaitu Lagenda, Akasia dan Sinetron.

Ketiga-tiganya menyediakan drama menarik dengan pelakon hebat serta jalan cerita yang pastinya mengasyikkan khusus untuk tontonan penonton TV3. Ketiga-tiga drama tersebut adalah Julia Juli untuk slot Lagenda, Matahari dalam slot Akasia dan drama bersiri Indonesia, Upik Abu & Laura yang bakal disiarkan dalam slot Sinetron.

Julia Juli yang diterbitkan oleh Tenview Sdn Bhd. ini diarahkan oleh pengarah yang tidak asing lagi iaitu Adam Hamid dan sudah menemui penonton mulai 3 Mac lalu. Siri 20 episod ini disiarkan setiap Isnin hingga Khamis jam 4.30 petang. Drama komedi romantik ini membariskan pelakon handalan tanah air seperti Dynas, Nik Safiyah, Zed Zaidi, Danny, Abby Abadi, Rahim Jelani, Syawal AF, Aqasha dan Imuda. Apa yang menarik drama ini turut mengetengahkan penyanyi popular Misha Omar.

Julia Juli adalah adaptasi dari sebuah cerita mitos bertajuk Jula Juli Bintang Tiga. Ia diolah semula menjadi drama bersiri sesuai untuk tontonan seisi keluarga. Drama ini memberi tumpuan kepada tiga beradik yang berasal dari dunia kayangan iaitu Jula, Juli dan Julu. Juli, kakak sulung taksub terhadap fesyen. Satu hari, setelah mengetahui dirinya akan dikahwinkan dengan Putera Adika yang tidak disukai, dia lari turun ke bumi dan terjumpa dengan Arif, seorang lelaki kaya. Arif yang terpikat dengan kecantikan Juli telah mencuri kalung identitinya dari dunia kayangan yang menyebabkan Juli lupa akan asal usulnya.

Slot Akasia pula menyiarkan drama bersiri Matahari bagi menggantikan Spa Q 2. Siri 44 episod ini bakal menemui penonton mulai 30 Mac. Drama ini diterbitkan oleh Pena Kreatif Sdn. Bhd dan hasil kerja dari pengarah berpengalaman Mohd Feroz Abdul Kadir Saheb. Ia membariskan pelakon seperti Nisdawati, Fahrin Ahmad, Aida Aris, Fauzi Nawawi, Hamidah Wahab, Syukery Hashim, Arash Mohd, Iqram Dinzly, Jehan Miskin, Erry Putra, Ako Mustapha, Fizo Omar, Sabrina Ali dan Noorkhiriah.

Drama Matahari mengisahkan seorang wanita yang terus memburu cinta sejati angkara kecundang dalam cinta pertama. Kisah tragis Matahari, seorang wanita kampung naif yang terpaksa mengharungi pelbagai dugaan musibah hidup dan ini telah menukarkannya menjadi wanita penuh keterampilan. Dengan kekuatan dan kepandaian yang ada pada dirinya, pelbagai tipu muslihat dirancang bagi memenuhi keinginan diri. Apakah kesudahan kisah sendu Matahari ini?

Slot Sinetron pula mengetengahkan siri Indonesia Upik Abu & Laura menggantikan Jelita dan bakal disiarkan pada 30 Mac ini. Siri ini mempunyai 103 episod dan mengetengahkan pelakon popular Indonesia seperti Alyssa Soebandono, Cinta Laura dan penyanyi dan pelakon terkenal, Irwansyah.

Siri ini mengisahkan permusuhan antara Opie dan Laura, dua orang gadis yang datang dari dua dunia dan latar belakang yang berbeza tetapi kedua-duanya mempunyai matlamat yang sama iaitu untuk hidup. Opie seorang gadis miskin tetapi mempunyai hati yang baik. Dia berusaha untuk mencari tempat berlindung untuk dirinya dan adik-beradik angkatnya selepas diusir dari rumah mereka yang bakal dibangunkan sebagai pusat membeli-belah. Manakala, Laura pula seorang anak manja dari keluarga kaya yang telah ditarik keistimewaannya oleh ayahnya untuk mengajar dia tentang erti kehidupan dengan memaksa dia menjalinkan persahabatan dengan Opie.

1. DiCaprio in sci-fi mode for Nolan's "Inception"
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Leonardo DiCaprio will star in "Inception," a sci-fi action film that "Dark Knight" helmer Christopher Nolan wrote and is directing.The contemporary story is described as taking place within "the architecture of the mind."

Nolan set up the project less than a month ago at Warner Bros., the studio where he made his Batman films as well as the thriller "Insomnia." The filmmaker and the studio are aiming for a 2010 release.DiCaprio next appears in Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island."

2. Conviction in murder of actor in Harry Potter film
LONDON – A London jury has convicted a man of murdering teenage actor Rob Knox, who had a small role in a soon-to-be released Harry Potter movie.Karl Bishop, who was found guilty Wednesday, could face life in prison when sentenced for the stabbing death of 18-year-old Knox.

Prosecutors say Bishop killed Knox outside a bar in east London in May after Knox stepped in to protect his brother, who had been threatened by the 22-year-old.Knox had just wrapped up filming on "Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince." The movie is the sixth in the Harry Potter series and is due out this summer.Knox played the part of Marcus Belby, a minor character.
