#596. New World Order [2009]

New World Order is a 2009 American documentary film directed by Luke Meyer and Andrew Neel. It explores activists who are committed to vigorously opposing what they perceive to be an emerging "New World Order".The film concentrates on the activities of Alex Jones, Jim Tucker, Jack McLamb, Luke Rudowski, and Timuçin Leflef, with particular focus on their efforts to expose the highly secretive meetings of the Bilderberg Group, promotion of the 9/11 Truth Movement, and opposition to the erosion of traditional American, Constitutionally-based civil and political rights and liberties. In an interview with Oxford Film Freak, Luke Meyer said he and partner Andrew Neel decided to make the documentary because, "I have always been interested in people who refuse to accept the standard belief systems, who do what they want or what they feel they have to regardless of what other people think." Neel added, "I thought conspiracy theorists were interesting because they see the world in a very different way... I wanted to know what it was like to be one of them."

The film contains archival footage of then-President George W. Bush, then-Senator (and later Vice President) Joe Biden, Senator John McCain, and former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski. It also includes appearances by Jim Marrs and Geraldo Rivera. The film premiered at South by Southwest on March 13, 2009, and Independent Film Channel began broadcasting it on April 16.

Few things are as tiresome as listening to people rant about their conspiracy theories. While there are, no doubt, tantalizing speculations to be made about the “inside job” that demolished the World Trade Center and the nefarious agenda of the global elite, movies about such things do well to involve James Bond and giant explosions.

“New World Order,” an unrelentingly tedious documentary by Luke Meyer and Andrew Neel, follows a group of considerably less glamorous truth-seekers. The most prominent of the filmmakers’ subjects, the radio host Alex Jones, who is based in Austin, Tex., rails against the powers that be — all of them — in a manner that reinforces every cliché of the conspiracy theorist loon: paranoid, megalomaniacal, delusional, sweaty. The documentary’s most action-packed scene finds Mr. Jones throwing a major hissy fit when his hotel fire alarm goes off, thereby proving, without a shadow of a doubt, that “they” are trying to suppress his revelations.

On the (somewhat) mellower side, Luke Rudowski, a 21-year-old New Yorker, spends all his free time distributing fliers and DVDs purporting to uncover the truth about 9/11. Seth Jackson, a relief worker in Louisiana, does his part by heckling Bill Clinton and other dark overlords. A retired police officer, Jack McLamb, meanwhile, has retreated to the safety of a separatist militia group.

There’s a movie to be made about the psychology of such men, their personal lives and private obsessions. “New World Order” merely gawks at them.

#448. LayarDokumentari ~ Standard Operating Procedure [2008]

The War on Terror will be photographed

Directed by: Errol Morris
Produced by: Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, Julia Sheehan
Release Date: April 25th, 2008 (limited)
MPAA Rating: R for disturbing images and content involving torture and graphic nudity, and for language.
Distributor: Sony Pictures Classics

Standard Operating Procedure is a 2008 documentary film which explores the meaning of the photographs taken by U.S. military police at the Abu Ghraib prison in late 2003 and which resulted in the subsequent Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse scandal. The film was directed by Errol Morris.

Standard Operating Procedure, the new film by Oscar-winning documentarian Errol Morris (The Fog of War), is a difficult film to embrace. A detailed investigation into the infamous photographs of atrocities committed by American soldiers at the Abu Ghraib prison, the film's narrow focus is both its point and its weakness.

Anybody who has been following Morris' New York Times blog knows that he has been obsessed with the close reading of photographs -- what they seem to say, what they prove, and what they leave out. With reenactments, animations that line the photos up on a timeline, and testimony by many of the soldiers directly involved in the scandal (Lynndie England, Janis Karpinksi, Sabrina Harman), the film tries to reconstruct the events behind the images: prisoners forced into stress positions, attacked by dogs, sexually humiliated, tortured, and killed.

At the press conference at the Berlin Film Festival, Morris made it clear that he was quite conscious of the limitations of his approach. Standard Operation Procedure does not attempt to contextualize the events. The political impact of the pictures, questions of culpability by higher ranks, and more widespread torture not caught on film are at best hinted at and lie safely outside Morris' purview.

Contentious journalists also asked pointed questions about his use of dramatic reenactments and a strangely inappropriate score by Danny Elfman. "Consciousness is a reenactment," Morris countered, and reassured us that he was in search of truth. He defended the music -- which inadvertently puts one in the mind of a Tim Burton film -- by pointing out that he pictured Standard Operation Procedure as a "non-fiction horror movie." There can be no doubt that S.O.P. offers a meticulously detailed account of a very dark chapter of American history, but it stands to reason that Ghosts of Abu Ghraib and Taxi To The Dark Side tell more accessible, wide-reaching, and all-out infuriating stories about the same topic.

The film appeared on several critics' top ten lists of the best films of 2008. Scott Tobias of The A.V. Club named it the 4th best film of 2008, J.R. Jones of the Chicago Reader named it the 7th best film of 2008, and Kenneth Turan of Los Angeles Times named it the 8th best film of 2008 (in a six-way tie).Morris's practice of compensating his interview subjects has caused controversy, although it is not an unusual practice in documentary filmmaking, according to the producer Diane Weyermann, who also worked on An Inconvenient Truth. In a private interview during the Tribeca Film Festival, Morris said: "If I had not paid them, they would not be interviewed."

_____________________________________________________________________________________

“Armed with pocket-sized video cameras, a tenacious band of Burmese reporters face down death to expose the repressive regime controlling their country. In 2007, after decades of self-imposed silence, Burma became headline news across the globe when peaceful Buddhist monks led a massive rebellion. More than 100,000 people took to the streets protesting a cruel dictatorship that has held the country hostage for more than 40 years. Foreign news crews were banned, the Internet was shut down, and Burma was closed to the outside world. So how did we witness these events? Enter the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), aka the Burma VJs. Compiled from the shaky handheld footage of the DVB, acclaimed filmmaker Anders Ostergaard’s Burma VJ pulls us into the heat of the moment as the VJs themselves become the target of the Burmese government. Their tactical leader, code-named Joshua, oversees operations from a safe hiding place in Thailand. Via clandestine phone calls, Joshua dispenses his posse of video warriors, who covertly film the abuses in their country, then smuggle their footage across the border into Thailand. Joshua ships the footage to Norway, where it is broadcast back to Burma and the world via satellite. Burma VJ plays like a thriller, all the more scary because it is true.” Burma VJ wins Joris Ivens Award and Movies That Matter Award in Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival 2008 also received World Cinema Documentary Film Editing Award in Sundance Film Festival 2009. The film opens in New York City in May, 2009.Østergaard and Joshua talk about the film at Independent Film Talk [http://www.ifc.com].

#280.LayarDocu : Gaza Sderot - Life in spite of everything

In the new French-made multimedia documentary Gaza-Sderot: Life in Spite of Everything, moments like this add to the eerie feeling that we are eavesdropping on doomed people. That sense is all the more acute because the audience knows how the story will soon turn out. The documentary was shot by two crews — one in Sderot and one in Gaza — between October and December last year, ending just four days before Israel unleashed on Gaza its fiercest bombing campaign in decades. The attack left an estimated 1,300 Palestinians dead and sent residents in nearby Sderot scrambling into underground shelters.

But the film is not concerned with what will happen in the future. That makes it a blast of fresh air after the cacophony of talking heads that dominate news coverage from the Middle East. "As the project went on, the stories became more and more subtle and less and less propaganda," says executive producer Serge Gordey in Paris. "People were not saying the same mantra over and over." The documentary, which will screen at the South-by-Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, on March 17, 2009 as well as on television networks in Israel, Canada, the Netherlands and Sweden in the coming months, breaks the mold in another way, too. Though funded by the French-German television channel Arte, Gaza-Sderot was created for the Internet, reversing the typical order in which films show on television and are then posted online. While filming, the two crews uploaded daily stories of about five minutes each on the production's website[ http://gaza-sderot.arte.tv], as well as long interviews with all the main subjects. The 52-minute documentary was edited from these hours of video postings.
____________________________________________________________________
Info :
Gaza Sderot is an original project broadcast by Arte.tv, the official site of ARTE, the French-German cultural television station, in coproduction with an Israeli team - Alma Films/Trabelsi Productions in cooperation with The Sapir College in Sderot, a Palestinian team - Ramattan Studios, a French documentary production company - Bo Travail ! and an interactive production company Upian.com.On Saturday, October 25th, 2008 "Gaza Sderot" won the "Prix Europa" which took place in Berlin.

This project reports on life as experienced by men, women and children in Gaza (Palestine) and Sderot (Israel) : their lives and their survival on a daily basis. Under difficult living conditions and the threat of air attacks and bombings, people do keep on working, loving and dreaming. Life in spite of everything.

#239. Poster : American Swing ( 2009 )

American Swing ( 2009 ) will release on 27th March, 2009. Here the brief synopsis ,the year was 1977 and New York City burned. As the metropolis hurtled into bankruptcy, the city's nightlife hit unprecedented heights. In the basement of the prestigious Ansonia building on the conservative Upper West Side, Plato's Retreat opened its doors to ordinary couples who came to dance, to swim, and… to swap. It was the start of a revolution. Previously, swinging was mostly an underground activity, engaged in primarily by the attractive and the well-to-do. But Plato's welcomed anyone and everyone. “American Swing" brings this little-known epic of sex and excess to the big screen for the first time.
